Assignment 3: How-To Video

July 27th, 2010

Kim and I are doing out “How To” video on bi-racial hair, specifically on how to manage and style it. We were inspired by a YouTube video in which a young lady expressed her feelings toward her hair through poetry.  Her ideas were moving, and really pushed this video forward.  As first generation “mixed” in both of our families, we decided to do a how-to video on how to deal with our bi-racial hair. This is a serious topic taken at a light glance in order to portray the emotion behind our hair.  Here’s our outline :

How to Deal With Bi-Racial Hair

Intro: Kim & Jenee wondering why their hair won’t look like the girls in the magazines.  Kim is a little child; Jenee is her mother giving her a lesson on how to deal with her bi-racial hair.

Step One: Realize that you have bi-racial hair

Step Two: Review possible hair styles & play with your options

Step Three: Wash your hair, make sure that it’s clean and manageable

Step Four: Comb it out, you cannot style hair that is tangled.

Step Five: For example, if you chose half-up. You will first need materials!

Step Six: Do your hair

Assignment 2: How To Be a Successful Nerd (:

July 4th, 2010

In our normal high schools, we are all considered nerds: the students who are in the advanced classes with the high grades. SMASH scholars are intelligent, hard-working, and diligent in all school tasks.  But is that what makes us nerds?  Well, it might, especially since we all dedicate our summers to coming to a place like this.  We are a step above other students, we are reaching higher expectations that make us stand out.  But our high school peers do not seem to properly acknowledge that.  Just the fact that we are at SMASH breaks the stereotypes that are put on us, racial and social.  My personal example is that my friends back home refer to me as a nerd.  They say me going to SMASH every summer is “math camp”, it is somewhat humorous to them.  I feel that not many people understand that nerds are more than just good in school, but also cool to be around. We’re fun, we’re exciting, and you would be surprised on how the definition changes with us.

The definition of nerd, in lamens terms, is someone with good grades that is usually a social outcast.  We also break that steroetype.  We know how to have fun, and we embrace that fact.  SMASH scholars are students that get good grades and can show you a great time.  Whether its playing volleyball between classes, going for night hikes, going to the movies, or even telling humorous academic jokes, we show a side to nerds that most people cannot even comprehend. We are cool nerds, and we’re not afraid to show it (:

Questions I plan to ask include:

- At your high school, what do your friends characterize you as?

- How do friends at SMASH differ from your friends in your respective high school?

- Do agree that nerds can have fun too? Why or why not?

Assignment 1: Energy!

July 1st, 2010

This is my group for the first project: Miko Jones, James Lopez, and Kevin Madrigal.  We were a very creative group who decided to add more than just the standard video project.  Our assignment was to use new programs, such as Final Cut Express, to make a video about energy.  Energy is the theme of SMASH this year, and we incorporated it completely in this video.  We were introduced to green screens, and this was an experimental assignment.  Being a creative group, we added more than the intended criteria.  We made a skit at the end that really summed up what the idea of energy is, and it is very entertaining. Hope you enjoy! (:
