Documentary Project – Pollution in Berkeley
July 30th, 2010
Pollution has become a very serious issue in the past decades but not many people truly believe in the cause or have truly accepted it. Humanity believes that someone else will always take care of the problem and that they don’t have to deal with it now, because there will “always” be a later. But, what if there is no later?! The people that know that better than anyone else are the people that live in Berkeley. Many things have happened that has turned Berkeley into the place it is today, a very liberal and amazing place for a college, but also a drastic place compared to that of an earlier and more beautiful time. Pollution kills the environment around us slowly and surely, don’t add to it.

Assignment #2 – Tenderloin
July 20th, 2010
For my video, I made a documentary/autobiography of my neighborhood, the Tenderloin. From the beginning I knew this was definitely the topic I wanted to talk about and I had no doubt in my mind I was going to change it. There are some down sides to living in the Tenderloin, but if it wasn’t for the Tenderloin, I wouldn’t have been a part of the TL Boys & Girls Club and I most definitely would not be going to a private school or be a part of SMASH. If it wasn’t for the kids and the Club, I wouldn’t have the ambition to one day go back to better my community.
In my video, I wanted to show people the kinds of things that I myself and many other kids and teens have witnessed in the Tenderloin, to illustrate the type of neighborhood it is, but then I also wanted to show people the kind of places/after-school programs that acted as refuge for kids. These programs protected the kids from all the negativity and lead them in a path of success within a positive environment.

S.M.A.S.H. has created many friendships that have a very high possibility of staying together even after S.M.A.S.H. This video will show the variety of friendships and also help compare the relationships of the scholars at S.M.A.S.H. and their relationships at their hometown.
Assignment 2: A SMASH Community
July 5th, 2010
Documentary: SMASH Community
I want to document the community factor of being apart of the SMASH family. While taking rigorous courses, one can think that the students don’t have enough time to bond however this idea is truly false. By portraying the true essence of our community, I can show the world that we are more than high achieving students. Not only are we the future scientists and engineers, we are the foundation for the greater society.
Questions for interview:
- Describe the SMASH community
- What are the factors that make a positive community?
- What’s the importance of community in relation to SMASH?
- What does community mean to you?
